In remembrance of Len Dawson
June 20, 1935 – August 24, 2022
Wildpins.com made this U.S made pin in a hurry, for the Kansas City Chiefs football club, when Len Dawson passed away in 2022. Thanks for all the great times Len!
, the Hall of Fame quarterback who led the Kansas City Chiefs to their first Super Bowl victory, passed away on August 24, 2022, at the age of 87. He is best remembered for his performance as the Most Valuable Player in Super Bowl IV, where he directed the Chiefs to a 23-7 upset win over the heavily favored Minnesota Vikings. Dawson played his entire 19-year professional career primarily with the Chiefs, joining the team in 1962 after playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns. He was instrumental in the Chiefs’ success, leading them to three AFL Championships in 1962, 1966, and 1969, and was named AFL Player of the Year in 1962. His quiet demeanor and precise passing earned him the nickname “Lenny the Cool” from his teammates.
Dawson was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1987 and the Chiefs Hall of Honor in 1979. He retired from playing in 1976 but continued his legacy as a respected sports broadcaster, serving as sports director at KMBC-TV in Kansas City, hosting HBO’s “Inside the NFL,” and providing color commentary for the Chiefs Radio Network for over four decades. His number 16 was retired by the Chiefs, a distinction held by only one player in franchise history. The Chiefs organization honored him by naming the television broadcast booth at Arrowhead Stadium the “Len Dawson Television Broadcast Booth” in 2014.
